CASE NUMBER:04/2017 – NTHUSETSANG VS SABC SAFM – NEWS REPORTS ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN EXPLICIT

A complaint was lodged about the content of two news bulletins which was broadcast on the PM Live show at 17:00 and 18:00 respectively. In the first bulletin it was reported that a serial rapist was convicted and reference was made to the fact that he raped a pregnant woman. The second bulletin contained a clip about the re-opening of an unsolved case. The newsreader referred mentioned that the victim’s hands were cut off. The complainant was of the opinion that sensitive listeners should have been warned of the content. The complaint was dismissed as the two references cannot be described as “explicit or graphic images or language”.
